Shipping Methods, Broken Down

Here at Vyking Ship we offer 3 carriers to ship your packages: DHL, FedEx, and USPS. The first two are private carriers, whereas the United States Postal Service (USPS) is a public carrier. What is the difference between the two?

USPS works for the government here in the United States, meaning they deal with a significantly larger workload when compared to the private carriers. This also means that their procedure is different in many aspects of the shipping process. When the USPS leaves a package with the US Customs office before the package leaves the country, that is the end of USPS’ involvement with the package. Once the package is flown into your country, it is processed by your local customs office, then given to your local postal carrier to be delivered to you.

With a private carrier, they are involved with the package during the entire journey. Both FedEx and DHL have offices around the world, so your package is always being dealt with by an employee of that company.

Another difference with both companies is the presence of brokerage fees. Both public and private carriers are susceptible to have duties and taxes when it comes to international shipments, however private companies have brokerage fees, or fees that they charge for carrying out the shipment of the package. This means that the vast majority of the time, USPS will have less fees associated with the transit of your package, compared to FedEx or DHL.

Another big difference between the three services is their delivery procedure. Due to the package switching hands between two companies and for other various reasons, while USPS’ delivery options have a 3-7 day and 6-14 day (for Express and Priority respectively) window, those are not guaranteed and they may extend beyond that time. With this said, if you do not see any movement or status updates on your package after 7 business days with an Express package, or after 10 business days with a Priority package, please contact us and we can open an inquiry with USPS to find out what is going on.

For FedEx and DHL, the time displayed on our website is a guarantee. If there is no delivery within that time, we can contact these companies to be compensated for it. FedEx and DHL packages have much more constant scan events and updates while the package is in transit, so if you do not see any updates after 2-3 days on your package, please let us know and we can get in touch with them.

In the event that a package is lost or damaged while in transit, it is very important that you contact us and let us know what happened. After we are aware of the situation, we are able to contact all 3 carriers for support when situations like this arise, however the procedure for FedEx and DHL is different than USPS. With DHL and FedEx packages, all we have to do is call them and we can get the reparation process started. For USPS, we must contact them to start an inquiry. Unfortunately, every country is different and these inquiries can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months in time. We will always update you when we hear back from an inquiry.
